Undercoat. Short thin wooly furs, used for insulation. Seen easily on kits, but not visible on adults (unless they're shedding) since it's hidden below the upper 2 layers.
Awn hairs. The "main" fur. Medium length, and black here on this fox. This and the undercoat are what sheds seasonally.
Guard hairs. The longest and thickest hairs of fur, which can also be a different color from the awn hairs. Very visible here as all the thick silver hairs. The stiff guard hairs guard the lower 2 layers from the elements, and don't shed as often.
