Fur has 3 layers to it:
  • Undercoat. Short thin wooly furs, used for insulation. Seen easily on kits, but not visible on adults (unless they're shedding) since it's hidden below the upper 2 layers.
  • Awn hairs. The "main" fur. Medium length, and black here on this fox. This and the undercoat are what sheds seasonally.
  • Guard hairs. The longest and thickest hairs of fur, which can also be a different color from the awn hairs. Very visible here as all the thick silver hairs. The stiff guard hairs guard the lower 2 layers from the elements, and don't shed as often.

Very clear here why theyre called silver foxes, in lots of photos they seem more black than silver-gray.
